Invited speaker “AI for Structural Engineering” at ARTISTE Conference

16 September 2025

Alper Kanyilmaz took part in the ARTISTE Conference, held in Turin (the first international event fully dedicated to AI solutions for structural engineering). His contribution, “Data-Driven and Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Sustainable Steel Reuse,” focused on the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the next generation of structural design methods, from data-driven optimization and generative approaches to predictive maintenance and the reuse of steel components.

The presentation explored how machine learning techniques can be applied to assess the residual capacity of existing steel members, enabling informed decisions on whether structural elements can be safely repurposed rather than scrapped. This approach directly supports circular economy goals by extending the useful life of steel components and reducing the embodied carbon associated with new production. The talk also addressed how advanced manufacturing technologies (such as metal 3D printing and laser cutting) can complement AI-driven assessment by enabling the fabrication of custom connection details that facilitate the integration of reclaimed steel elements into new structural systems.

The ARTISTE Conference brought together leading researchers and practitioners committed to bridging the gap between computational intelligence and practical engineering design. As one of the first events to address AI applications in structural engineering as its central theme, the conference provided a platform for discussing emerging topics including physics-informed neural networks for structural analysis, computer vision for automated inspection, generative design for structural optimization, and digital twin frameworks for infrastructure management.

Alper Kanyilmaz is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, where he leads the S+ Lab for data-driven structural engineering. His research spans AI-driven structural assessment, life cycle analysis, and advanced manufacturing for steel construction. He serves as Expert Advisor for the European Commission and is a member of CEN/TC 250/SC 3/AHG 4 on AI Design of Steel Structures.
